May 11, 2010—Raleigh, NC— Viztek’s advanced Opal-RAD PACS has a new role in the popular Discovery Health Channel series Dr. G: Medical Examiner, featuring Dr. Jan Garavaglia, one of the nation’s leading forensic pathologists, as she solves the real-life medical mysteries of people’s unexpected and unexplained deaths.

The Viztek image management technology was selected by the award-winning forensic pathologist for her real-life laboratory, where the show is filmed.  There, she views and manages the medical images used to help solve the complex cases that pass through the District Nine Medical Examiner’s Office serving Orange and Osceloa Counties in Florida.

When the notable cases appearing on the show call for image viewing, the famous doctor relies on her Viztek Opal-RAD PACS, and the technology is visible to hundreds of thousands of television viewers around the country.
In the series, Dr. G explains how people may die suddenly and unexpectedly and uses cutting-edge forensic science and technology to solve the mysteries of life and death.  As one of the important pieces of equipment in the lab, the Viztek solution is used consistently and often called upon to show images that help explain the details of a medical case to her audience.

Dr. G’s work is a public service to the community, as she determines cause and manner of death. She also plays a significant role in helping family members obtain closure and cope with the tragic loss of a loved one.
“We believe it is an exciting opportunity to have Opal-RAD PACS featured on this extremely popular show seen by viewers across the country,” says Steve Deaton, Vice President of Sales for Viztek. “In the series, the technology helps to educate viewers about the importance of medical imaging by providing a window into the body that can help explain life, disease and death.”

Each episode of the show follows at least three unexplained cases. Viewers have the opportunity to witness the extent to which Dr. G goes to ensure that the victims, and the families they’ve left behind, rest in peace.  The show is broadcast on Mondays at 9PM on the Discovery Health Channel.
