Improving the Security of Medical Imaging in the Cloud

In order to expedite the process of image sharing and information exchange between practices, the cloud is becoming an increasingly popular avenue. It facilitates the process for radiologists who need to share data with other professionals within their network.

According to Healthcare IT News, one of the top healthcare information technology trends for 2014 will be the adoption and implementation of cloud technology. Working in the cloud can provide physicians with the tools to remotely access and store patient data, as well as increase security by reducing instances of breaches. Here are some ways the cloud can improve the secure exchange of Medical imaging.

Controlling user access
A big security risk when it comes to Digital Radiography is the unauthorized access of patient data.

Through the use of features like patient and referring Physician portal that requires a unique login username and password, only authorized users can see pertinent patient data. The cloud architecture allows for the set up of authentication requirements for all users and administrators, which restricts use based on individuals or group level permissions . Through the use of the cloud, radiologists can grant specific patients and referring physicians access to certain data within the system without having to worry about security breaches.

Protection team
Mitigating data storage to a third-party can be a concern for some physicians because it takes security out of their hands and into those of unknown parties. However, many reputable cloud providers have their own policies in place that cover breaches and procedures that are executed by a security team in case of a leak. These teams constantly monitor data access in order to provide security to imaging data, around the clock. Their own facilities have strict policies in place to ensure the utmost security for the data including, restricted access to certain areas of the building.

Design structure
The cloud uses an encrypted private network for radiologists and physicians to communicate with one another. This coding allows the secure transfer of medical data while ensuring confidentiality. No one can access information without the necessary proper credentials.

When it comes to providing security to sensitive patient data, the cloud has many benefits for radiologists looking to take part in health information exchange. It can fully support PACS and other radiology information systems for providers from all practice sizes with constant upgrades and top-of-the-line security measures.
