235-bed, Pennsylvania-based hospital replaced legacy PACS with Viztek’s Opal-RAD PACS
July 30, 2013 – Raleigh, NC – Viztek, the leading provider of complete digital software and hardware diagnostic imaging solutions, announced today that Meadville Medical Center, Meadville, Pa., has completed installation of the web-based Opal-RAD PACS. After exploring various systems, radiologists and IT staff agreed that the 235-bed hospital would benefit from the advanced infrastructure, software design and clinical support tools of the web-based PACS.
With the Viztek solution, physician access to images has been enhanced in a number of ways, enabling diagnosis and treatment decisions to be made in a timelier manner. The Opal-RAD PACS is available on virtually any device, including computers, smartphones, mobile and tablet devices, providing end users with secure online access to patient images and reports, enabling their fast viewing and sharing with specialists or for second opinions. Further, it does not require dedicated workstations for different modalities, so chest x-rays and full field digital mammography (FFDM) exams can all be read from the same workstation, as the software runs on a web-based system allowing the radiologists and physicians to view from anywhere utilizing the same platform.
“Once I came onboard, I knew that we had to look at different solutions for back up and disaster recovery for the PACS we had in place at that time,” said John Wilpula, PACS Administrator from Meadville Medical Center. “We soon found that in this instance it was more cost effective to purchase an entirely new system, Viztek’s Opal-RAD PACS, than purchasing a second storage system for backup of the existing PACS. When we found Viztek, we realized that we could spend less, yet receive upgraded technology resulting in a greater ROI and more money in the budget for other projects and new modalities. The best part of the Viztek PACS is that they are able to work with us to add any customizable features that we need.”
With approximately 112,000 exams performed per year, Meadville’s radiology department needed a reliable PACS system that would provide an efficient workflow. Previously, the doctors needed to send an actual disc to different facilities for review. Now, with the use of web-based Opal-RAD, the exams can be viewed virtually anywhere and there are no licensing restrictions to run the program on multiple computers. Radiologists and the IT team supporting them at the 235-bed hospital can benefit from the advanced infrastructure, software design and clinical support tools of the system, which enables the facility to have a smaller footprint, transitioning from 13 servers to just two. Additionally, Viztek proved to be very flexible, allowing radiologists to access the PACs from any remote location and not requiring licensing for each computer.
“The Viztek Opal-RAD encompasses a powerful suite of digital radiology tools to achieve the most fully integrated patient database, imaging and communications system on the market today,” said Steve Deaton, vice president, Viztek. “Our technology provides advanced infrastructure so that facilities can benefit from working on a uniform platform, simplifying education, training and troubleshooting.”
