The technology boom of the digital age is changing the delivery of health care for many providers. Patients are becoming more involved with their own care as Electronic Medical Records get mainstreamed in physicians’ offices. EHR software also permits providers to manage their workflow better and improve the overall quality of care. The emergence of health information exchange has been pushed by EHRs due to the comprehensive patient data they can compile. Consequently, medical imaging technology has seen improvement as well.
Adopting mobility in health care
In order to adapt to the changing face of health care, physicians are looking for the most efficient methods to utilize budding technology to optimize the flows of their practices. The ability to access patient information remotely has become a necessity, especially when that data includes Digital Radiography and Diagnostic Imaging. Physicians are joining the rest of the population in acquiring mobile devices, such as smartphones and tablets, for the purpose of continuing care outside of the doctor’s office.
According to a 2013 Mobile Trends Report from Epocrates, 47 percent of physicians use a combination of smartphones, tablets and computers in their practice. The burst of mobile technology can have great benefits for improving patient care, especially when it comes to medical imaging. Using phones and tablets allows physicians to review diagnoses in real time and even collaborate with other professionals in their network.
The increased use of mobile devices in health care can have a great effect on medical imaging. Typically, it’s challenging to transfer medical images from practice to practice. The images from a cardiologist and radiologist are uploaded to separate picture archiving and communication systems, despite the fact that the data may be available in the patient’s EHR.
Now that more physicians are utilizing tablets and smartphones, the case can be made for the adoption of a single program that allows multiple users to access images securely. Using a mobile medical imaging viewer can drastically improve both the delivery of care and the management of workflow. It would also allow for fluid integration with existing EHR’s and PACS Software.
As physicians look to better their practices by including improved health care technology, medical imaging efficiency will see advancements as well. The implementation of a mobile viewer for Digital Radiography could have a significantly positive impact on the management of practices in the near future.
