How Social Media Can Help Radiologists

Patient engagement has been a focal point for medical practices around the U.S. as providers try to get their populations more invested in health care. While radiologists and other physicians might be busy, online social networking on a professional level can be integral to their careers.

William Auffermann, Ph.D., from Emory University School of Medicine, recently penned an editorial for the online publication Academic Radiology regarding radiologists' use of social media. These networking services provide doctors with a range of opportunities to improve their employment outlook by connecting with other like-minded physicians for clinical and research-related matters, AuntMinnie.com explained. In addition, they could use social media to communicate directly with patients and keep tabs on their progress following various diagnostic imaging procedures.

"The alternative is that a radiologist becomes less connected compared to their colleagues, a dangerous situation in the current competitive healthcare environment," wrote Auffermann, quoted by the source. "Consequently, online social networking services are a vital aspect of a radiologist's career and may be readily incorporated into one's daily practice."

With the inclusion of PACS platforms, radiologists spend less time traveling to reading rooms and reduce their levels of social interaction with other doctors. While face-to-face encounters are important to grow a radiologist's visibility, social networks could allow providers to share useful information that helps improve clinical care and enhance research.

In addition, social media can play a vital role in health care education. Physicians can share insightful stories and advice with one another, engaging in thoughtful conversations over the Web.

The ways for radiologists to use social media
Joining online networking sites keeps doctors updated on the latest radiology news and connects them with a range of colleagues. For example, the Mayo Clinic is connected with individuals from more than 100 countries, expanding its community outreach abilities to an international level, Diagnostic Imaging explained. There are numerous ways for radiologists to get the most out of social media.

As software vendors improve upon existing products, medical imaging practices consider switching out their current PACS for a newer system. By creating a social media account, radiologists could open discussions with other professionals to learn which platform is best suited for their facilities. These crowdsourcing opportunities give radiologists the chance to learn about the pros and cons of various software without needing to jump through hoops with vendors.
