HIMSS 2016 Education Topics Include Meaningful Use, Interoperable Tech

On Feb. 29, the Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society will kick off its week-long annual conference in Las Vegas, Nevada. Organizers plan to address a variety of education topics throughout the event, many of which will interest radiologists looking for a glimpse into the future of health care.

Business of Health Care and New Payment Models
Dr. Clifford Fullerton, chief population health officer at Baylor Scott & White Health in Texas, and Mark Stauder, president and COO of Inova Health System, will lead a session on value-based payment models and dissect two workable prototypes. Experts will closely monitor the medical imaging industry over the next year to see if radiologists can adjust to the payment-based paradigm shift, reported AuntMinnie.com.

"While actual payment adjustments won't occur this year, radiology practices should start thinking now about how they will adjust to these new payment models," Dr. Andrew Rosenkrantz, a radiologist at New York University's Langone Medical Center, told the publication.

Clinical Informatics and Clinician Engagement
According to The Wall Street Journal, smartphones are radically changing all sectors of the health care industry, including medical imaging. Hundreds of thousands of radiologists are using image-sharing apps like Figure 1 and medical device companies are producing hand-held ultrasound and magnetic resonance imaging devices that replicate the feel of an iPhone. Linda Hogan, Ph.D., will discuss this trend, touch on a few exceptional point-of-care apps and talk about how smartphones, when used judiciously, can actually improve patient outcomes.

EHRs and Meaningful Use
Since Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services Acting Administrator Andy Slavitt announced the end of Meaningful Use last month, health care professionals have been waiting for a peek at the federal government's replacement EHR incentive program. Slavitt said he hopes the new program will facilitate wider EHR implementation, reported AuntMinnie.com.

Multiple presenters at HIMSS 2016 will discuss EHR adoption. Marcus Hobgood, chief information officer at Louisiana State University Health Science Center, Shreveport, and Jason Jones, national director of health care strategy at Dell Healthcare and Life Sciences, will talk about how they successfully divided one health organization and its records system into two organizations with separate systems, all without compromising EHR performance. And, officials from the Defense Healthcare Management Systems are scheduled to give a presentation on the Military Health System's implementation of the Department of Defense EHR.

Health Information Exchange and Interoperability
Industry experts agree: Interoperable health information systems are the future of health care, reported Becker's Health IT and CIO Review. Unfortunately, a number of roadblocks stand in the way of achieving sector-wide interoperability. Information technology companies make disparate, incompatible systems; software often doesn't fit into existing clinical environments and health system executives fail to educate themselves before investing in large-scale technology solutions.

Personnel from Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in Boston plan to address these issues, along with a host of others during a session on health information technology infrastructure and data sharing.

IT Infrastructure, HIT Standards and Medical Device Integration
HIMSS in January released its 2015 Imaging Technology Study, which showed that cloud-based storage use within the industry rose 4 percent in 2015. However, many radiology departments still store images in PACS that use physical servers.

Gary Horn, chief technology officer at Advocate Health Care, is scheduled to give a presentation on how his health system transitioned from a traditional data center to a streamlined, cloud-based model. Horn will take attendees through a detailed, step-by-step process, touch on topics such as cost and bureaucratic resistance and sort through the concerns many within the industry have about cloud-based data storage.

And, Liz Michael, vice president of patient care services and chief nursing officer at Stillwater Medical Center in Stillwater, Oklahoma, will talk about how the introduction of mobile heath technology and other infrastructure-related tweaks can improve patient outcomes.
