April has finally arrived, and with it, so has the annual Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society conference. From April 12 – 16, doctors, nurses, insurance providers and entrepreneurs will gather at McCormick Place Convention Center in Chicago for days of networking, presentations and exhibitions.

New programs to draw in crowd
Last year's conference participation topped in at nearly 38,000 and 1,200 company exhibits, 8 percent and 7 percent increases from 2013, respectively, according to Healthcare Informatics. The HIMSS hopes to surpass this number with several new programs.

With the chance of an emergency situation occurring unexpectedly, the need for planning for all circumstances is crucial. The Disaster Preparedness Knowledge Center contains 16 sessions over the course of the conference to help health care providers prepare for any kind of catastrophe, from cyber attacks to epidemics, according to HIMSS15's website. Presentations range from educating professionals about guarding their EHR software to preparing for unexpected natural disasters.

The Health IT Value Suite also provides vital information for protecting patients' records. The program itself was implemented in 2013 by the HIMSS to educate health care professionals about improving their health care information systems, the HIMSS explained in a press release. This year, the program is coming to the conference with more than 25 group and one-on-one sessions.

Bringing back the favorites
While new sessions will provide attendees with knowledge about today's popular topics, the HIMSS is continuing the tried-and-true exhibits. Presentations throughout the continuing Connected Patient Gallery, Intelligent Health Pavilion, Mobile Health Knowledge Center and the First-Time Exhibitor Dedicated Area will help educate attendees on what is happening in their preferred fields.

Interoperability in EHR software still has not been achieved. However, health care providers are making the effort to reach it. The Interoperability Showcase has a plethora of sessions throughout the conference that will continue to push the Meaningful Use program's goal.

The Federal Agencies Health IT Solutions Pavilion will keep conference participants up to date on current health initiatives in the government and how they will affect the medical industry. It will also provide information on how to utilize patient portals and smart devices to improve patient care.

There are various activities to do over the course of the five days. For those attending HIMSS15, Healthcare IT News advised browsing the session catalog and coordinating with coworkers and friends to ensure everyone gets the most out of the conference.
