Viztek Opal-EHR Receives Complete Ambulatory Meaningful Use Certification

Raleigh, November 12, 2012 – Viztek, the leading radiology solution provider, announced today certification for its Opal-EHR as a complete ambulatory Electronic Health Record (EHR) solution by the Office of the National Coordinator (ONC-ATCB).  Certification is necessary to enable purchasers to qualify for federal incentive payments as part of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act.  Incentives may be as high as $44,000 per radiologist at qualifying practices implementing EMR systems.

“Viztek was committed to developing a robust Complete EHR system, compared to a Modular system which would provide only part of the technology needed to qualify for reimbursement,” said Steve Deaton, Vice President of Sales for Viztek. “This means Opal-EHR provides such components as physician and patient portals for accessing information as well as functionality for lab orders, medication and e-prescribing. “

Complete and Modular are two distinct categories of EHR certification.  By contrast to Viztek’s Complete approach, a Modular system would require users to purchase and integrate additional components to qualify for full incentives.  Sites would need to ensure that together these components fulfill appropriate Meaningful Use criteria and are also integrated appropriately to achieve these goals.

“In Opal-EHR, we were also committed to creating a system that is affordable and easy to use to make the benefits of Meaningful Use accessible to every practice,” notes Deaton.

An Electronic Health Record is a digital record of patient health information generated during one or more encounters in any care delivery setting.  In an effort to streamline the sharing of medical data across institutional boundaries using such systems, the federal government is providing bonus payments to healthcare enterprises that adopt EHR technologies meeting certain standards.  These include both the types of information stored as well as the standards-based format in which the information is archived.

Under Meaningful Use, providers are accountable to demonstrate that they are using a certified EHR technology which can be proven through both quality and quantity measures.

Currently, Opal-EHR is available for imaging centers and podiatry clinics.  Shortly versions will be released for urgent care, general practice, cardiology and orthopedics practices.  Since Opal-EHR has earned a Complete certification, even if facilities do not already collect data on all core measures required for full reimbursement, they can begin collection immediately and apply for full reimbursement, if desired.
