With the recent advancements in medical technology, it comes as no surprise that certain market values of health care services are set to increase over the next few years. According to a report published by Transparency Market Research, Teleradiology will almost quadruple its global market value from $0.92 billion to $3.78 billion between 2014 and 2019.

The report covers a detailed study of various imaging procedures in radiology, such as X-ray, MRI and ultrasound, in four major geographical locations, including North America. The United States and Canada contributed to the region’s position as the largest share of the teleradiology market due to rapid innovations in technology and an expanding consumer base.

Keys to success
According to Transparency’s report, constant improvements in Digital imaging and a drop in radiologists around the world are leading to a growth in Teleradiology’s global market value. Additionally, the increasingly positive reception of social media and Web-based technology will advance the spread of teleradiology practices.

It’s also worth noting that consistent upgrades to PACS and RIS have improved the overall process of image capture, storage and reporting.

What is teleradiology?
When a radiologist uses Diagnostic imaging to examine a patient’s condition, the image is stored on PACS software. This permits convenient access to the stored data for review of electronic medical records. Teleradiology refers to when the images are transmitted from one location to another for the purpose of either diagnosis or consultation.

State standards for teleradiology
According to the American College of Radiology, states became concerned about regulating care provided by physicians from out-of-state. Starting in the mid-1990s, 30 states in the country now use telemedicine to monitor health care across state lines. The ACR adopted standards in 1994 that stipulated physicians who provided medical imaging through teleradiology should have appropriate licenses for both sites that send and receive the data. For example, if a radiologist from Mississippi wants to assist a practice in Alabama, the state of Alabama requires he or she to have a full, unrestricted state license. These standards differ from state to state, however, and the ACR provides resources for radiologists to review.

The rapid growth and success of the teleradiology global market can be attributed to many factors, such as advances in health care systems and technologies. As a result, the benefits of the medical software will continue to spread over the coming years.
