Health care education is never ending. There is always something new medical professionals can learn to improve the way they perform their jobs and care for patients. Luckily, there are a multitude of conferences and seminars throughout the year to cater to nearly every specialty. Diagnostic radiology experts are the next ones who have the chance to increase their knowledge. From July 19 – July 22, the Association for Medical Imaging Management's 43rd Annual Meeting and Exposition in Las Vegas will educate attendees in all aspects of radiology, from improving communications and workflows to managing the department's finances.

What is the AHRA?
In 1972, six men discovered that no organization existed that catered to the needs of administrators in radiology departments. A year later, they founded the Association for Medical Imaging Management, formerly called the American Hospital Radiology Administrators, Inc. and still going by its acronym, to standardize the specialty and educate the people who worked in those departments on the various aspects of radiology management, the organization explained on its website.

Since its first national meeting in 1973, the AHRA has opened its doors to all radiology employees, instead of just department administrators. The organization now numbers approximately 5,000 members. The AHRA has also expanded its programs. Hospitals and professionals now have access to various seminars, conferences, publications and educational institutions. Each year brings new programs and presentations that work to develop today's health care providers into tomorrow's leaders.

What sessions are at this year's conference?
Combining keynote speakers, seminars, presentations and educational workshops, this year's annual meeting will hold up to previous years' standards. Diagnostic imaging employees will be able to learn from other professionals from all aspects of the specialty, from software and hardware vendors to health care providers. According to this year's brochure, there are sessions for several interests on a range of topics, such as:

  • "Managerial Communication: Communicating More Effectively in the Workplace" – This interactive seminar helps employees improve both their verbal and written communication skills. Participants will learn how to listen better, read non-verbal cues, assess different personalities and be empathetic toward others.
  • "Budgeting for Business Management" – In this two-part session, attendees will gain the skills to help plan and manage their departments' budgets. Financial plans can change with little notice, so it is crucial for people to know how to make adjustments when necessary. This seminar provides professionals with the tools they need to plan, monitor and alter budgets to improve workflow efficiency.
  • "Introduction to Business Writing: Proposals, P&P and Regulatory Requirements" – No matter what industry or department people are in, they will have to know how to write formal documents. This session will show participants how to create clear and concise messages for all types of audiences. Not only will the presentation show people how to communicate in various styles, it will also teach them how to formulate workplace policies and regulations.
  • "Laugh-O-Nomics: Connecting Happiness At Work to Business Success" – Holding jobs in health care can be stressful. However, it does not have to be that way. Keynote speaker Brad Montgomery will share his experiences and offer tips for dealing with high-intensity situations. Using a mix of comedy, magic and storytelling, he will illustrate to attendees how to take control of their own happiness by opening up lines of communication and learning how to collaborate with co-workers.

There are plenty of sessions for attendees to choose from and countless ways to relax during and after them. With beverage breaks, the Imaging Classic Golf Tournament and the Venetian Carnival Masquerade Party, conference-goers will have time to socialize and share their experiences with their peers.
